Brass Deep Drawing: What It Is and Why It Matters

Deep drawing is a cold-forming process. A punch presses a flat brass blank through a die until it becomes a seamless, hollow part. When the depth is greater than the part's radius, the process is called deep drawing. It usually takes several progressive draw stages, followed by trimming, piercing and finishing.

Ata Buttons has worked with brass since 1999. Snap buttons, eyelets, rivets and jean buttons are all, at heart, deep drawn brass components. Each one starts as brass strip and is blanked, drawn, trimmed and formed on our presses. It is then electroplated and inspected under the same roof. We make the tooling in-house too, so a custom logo, a new flange profile or a different depth is a change to our own tools, not to a subcontractor's.

We supply UK clothing brands, leather goods makers, footwear producers and component buyers. You get a European-standard part from a single, accountable factory, with shorter lead times than Far East sourcing.

How a Deep Drawn Brass Component Is Made

  1. Material selection. We choose a brass strip grade and temper suited to the depth of draw and the final finish.
  2. Blanking. A flat circular (or shaped) blank is cut from the strip with minimal scrap.
  3. First draw. The punch pushes the blank into the die and forms a shallow cup. The blank holder controls the flow of metal and prevents wrinkling.
  4. Redrawing. Further draw stages reduce the diameter and increase the depth, step by step, until the final shape is reached.
  5. Trimming, piercing & forming. We trim the edge, pierce holes, roll or curl flanges and emboss logos or knurls.
  6. Cleaning & electroplating. Parts are degreased and plated in nickel, antique brass, gold, black nickel, gunmetal or a custom colour. Nickel-free finishes are available.
  7. Inspection & packing. We check dimensions, finish and function (for example, snap engagement) before packing for export.

Why UK Buyers Source Deep Drawn Brass from Turkey

Closer than the Far East, more competitive than Western Europe

Istanbul is a short flight from London. Road and air freight to the UK take days, not the weeks of sea freight from Asia. That means smaller, more frequent orders, less stock tied up and quicker reaction to a new season.

Preferential trade under the UK–Turkey FTA

The UK–Turkey Free Trade Agreement has been in force since 1 January 2021. Goods that meet its rules of origin can enter the UK at preferential tariff rates. We prepare the export documents for each shipment, and you can confirm the commodity code and origin status with your customs broker.

One factory, full accountability

Drawing, plating, tooling and inspection all happen in one place. You deal with the manufacturer directly, so a technical question goes to the people who run the presses, not to an agent.

Deep Drawn Brass: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a deep drawn brass component?

A deep drawn brass component is a seamless, hollow metal part, such as a cup, shell, cap, ferrule or eyelet barrel. It is formed by pressing a flat brass blank into a die with a punch. Because the part is drawn from one piece of brass strip, it has no welds or seams. It keeps a consistent wall and holds plating finishes well.

Which brass parts does Ata Buttons produce by deep drawing?

Most of our product range starts as deep drawn or pressed brass: snap button caps, sockets and studs; eyelet and grommet barrels; rivet caps; jean button shells; brass rings for polyester buttons; and metal aglets and cord ends. We also quote custom deep drawn brass parts made to your drawing.

What is the difference between deep drawing and stamping?

Stamping (blanking, piercing and bending) cuts and forms sheet metal mostly in one plane. Deep drawing stretches the blank into a three-dimensional hollow shape, often over several draw stages, until the depth can exceed the part diameter. Many components combine both processes: a blank is stamped, deep drawn, then trimmed and pierced.

Why is brass used for deep drawn parts?

Brass, a copper-zinc alloy, is ductile, so it can be drawn into deep shapes without cracking. It resists corrosion and contains no nickel in the base alloy. It also takes electroplated finishes such as nickel, antique brass, gold, black nickel and gunmetal very well. This makes it the standard material for garment hardware and decorative hollow parts.

What do I need to send for a deep drawn brass quotation?

Please send a drawing or sample (PDF, DXF or STEP), the required alloy or application, wall thickness, finish, estimated annual and per-order quantity, and the UK delivery address. If you only have a physical sample, we can work from that. Our engineers will confirm feasibility and tooling.

How long does sampling take, and what is the minimum order?

Samples from our existing tooling are typically ready in about 3 working days. For snap buttons, the minimum order starts at 5,000 pieces per style. Custom deep drawn parts that need new tooling are quoted individually, with MOQ and lead time confirmed after drawing review.

Do you supply UK companies directly?

Yes. Ata Buttons is a direct factory, not a trading company. We export from Istanbul to the UK and prepare the commercial invoice, packing list and origin documentation for each shipment. Under the UK–Turkey Free Trade Agreement, goods of Turkish origin can qualify for preferential tariff treatment when origin requirements are met.
