Zamak vs Brass vs Iron: Comparing Base Metals for Textile Accessories

Zamak vs Brass vs Iron: Comparing Base Metals for Textile Accessories

Understanding Base Metal Options

The base metal of a textile accessory determines its weight, durability, corrosion resistance, plating quality, and cost. The three primary metals used in textile accessories manufacturing are zamak (zinc alloy), brass (copper-zinc alloy), and iron (steel). Each has distinct properties that make it ideal for specific applications.

Zamak (Zinc Alloy)

What is Zamak?

Zamak (also Zamac or MAZAK) is a family of zinc-aluminum alloys, with Zamak 5 being the most common in textile accessories. It contains approximately 96% zinc, 4% aluminium, plus small amounts of copper and magnesium.

Zamak Properties

  • Manufacturing: Die-cast into complex 3D shapes
  • Surface quality: Excellent — smooth, detailed surfaces ideal for plating
  • Weight: Medium — heavier than aluminium, lighter than brass
  • Corrosion resistance: Good (better than iron, less than brass)
  • Cost: Medium

When to Use Zamak

Zamak is the go-to material for complex-shaped accessories that cannot be stamped from flat metal. Our zamak product range includes sew-on buttons, D-ring buckles, cord ends, and spring stoppers.

Brass (Copper-Zinc Alloy)

What is Brass?

Brass used in textile accessories is typically CuZn37 (63% copper, 37% zinc), also known as cartridge brass. It is the traditional material for quality textile hardware.

Brass Properties

  • Manufacturing: Stamped from flat sheet, drawn, or turned
  • Surface quality: Excellent — natural golden colour, takes plating beautifully
  • Weight: Heavy — provides premium, substantial feel
  • Corrosion resistance: Excellent — naturally resists corrosion
  • Cost: Higher — copper content makes brass more expensive

When to Use Brass

Brass is preferred for components requiring the best corrosion resistance, premium weight, and superior plating quality. Most of our snap buttons, eyelets, and jean buttons use brass as the base material.

Iron (Steel)

What is Iron/Steel in Textile Accessories?

Low-carbon steel (iron) is the most economical base metal. It is stamped and formed into shape, then always plated to prevent rust.

Iron Properties

  • Manufacturing: Stamped from flat sheet — fastest production
  • Surface quality: Good — requires quality plating for appearance
  • Weight: Heavy — similar to brass
  • Corrosion resistance: Poor without plating — will rust if plating is damaged
  • Cost: Lowest

When to Use Iron

Iron is chosen when cost is the primary concern and the accessory will not be exposed to moisture. Our iron eyelets, iron wire buckles, and iron adjustment buckles serve cost-sensitive applications.
